STYLE WISDOM
How understanding my style personality changed my life
by Vard Mov
When I used to think of the word ‘style’, I often thought of fashion, clothes–of those wealthy, care-free people whose only job it is to express themselves by looking good. As a full-time teacher in my early twenties, I had little time to think about style, or how I wanted to express myself in general. But being constantly distracted by work for years ultimately made me feel less in touch with myself.

When I discovered my love of fashion–which I think was always there beneath the surface–I also discovered the catharsis of digging deep down into yourself to uncover your personality. It was self-therapy, to say the least. The process felt so right, in fact, that I went on to pivot my career and become a personal stylist and a life coach.

Today, I help individuals to connect with their roots, whatever they may be, and develop a sense of self that can be confidently reflected in their personal style–and I never cease to remember that I was my own first client.

From learning fashion history and decluttering my wardrobe, to creating mood boards informed by understanding my body type, I embraced the process of understanding myself and my style and learning to express it through fashion and lifestyle. I can now say with full confidence this shift was one of the best decisions of my life.

Tapping into your true self can be a long and arduous process: it can involve evaluating your preferences, likes and dislikes, your goals–both small and large–and staying on top of developments in your day-to-day life. You might feel like you’re far away from the person you ideally want to be–or you might discover things in your life that are no longer serving you, or never were. But all of this is necessary if you want to understand your deeper self, let alone develop a style for it.

Sounds tough, I know–but getting in touch with yourself is truly priceless. For me, I no longer have to second guess myself, or overthink simple stylistic choices. I’ve created seasonal capsule wardrobes that both compliment my body shape and personal coloration, so I always have the perfect thing to wear. I found that it wasn’t hard saying goodbye to pieces that I never wore, never felt comfortable in or that simply didn’t serve me. It was like the uplifting feeling of shedding excess weight. I also found that decluttering my belongings helped to declutter my mind, and I was able to make space for the important things I was neglecting before, like my health and wellness or time with loved ones. In this modern world, staying grounded and true to yourself–both materially and mentally–is key.
Developing a sense of self and style ultimately saves you time, money and worries–and gives you the capacity to experience your life to the fullest. Trust me, it’s worth it.
I’ve curated my world with my deeper self in mind, so I’m not concerned with impromptu situations getting the best of me. I’ve learned how to regularly treat my base (nails, hair, body, etc.) so that I’m always ready to look my best from top to toe at the drop of a hat. And I wake up every morning with the comforting feeling of knowing I can take whatever the world throws at me that day. A great example is when I was invited to a last minute gallery opening. The old Vard would’ve stressed out over what to wear, how to do my hair, etc.– I probably wouldn’t have even gone simply because I couldn’t get in touch with myself at that moment. But because I was prepared and I had taken the important steps to set myself up for success ahead of time, I went to the exhibit and ended up meeting some amazing people who are part of my life today.

The take-away? Developing a sense of self and style ultimately saves you time, money and worries–and gives you the capacity to experience your life to the fullest. Trust me, it’s worth it.

The quality of my life has increased substantially since my journey began; since I did the work,I now have time to work out three times a week, play tennis, spend time with my loved ones, and travel. Best of all, I have the honor of being able to impact my clients’ lives through my work as their personal stylist and life coach (my favorite part), and reflect on my experiences in my personal blog and my social media channels. I stay on top of maintaining this elevated state of existence by keeping my house neat and organized–and do it all consistently. To me this is life lived well.
